How to Start Selling with Homegry

Step by step advice, practical tips and inspiration to help you succeed on Homegry

Step 1 — Review the official food business standards

Start by exploring the Food Standards Agency’s guide for new food businesses. It covers essential registration rules and what to prepare before you open. Any home cook who handles, stores, or sells food, even online, is considered a food business. Remember to notify your local authority at least 28 days before you start serving customers.

Step 2 — Register your kitchen officially

If you plan to sell meals regularly, you must register with your local council. This process is entirely free and must be done before your first sale. If you have any doubts about whether your setup requires registration, reach out to your local authority for help.

Step 3 — Confirm your home can host a business

Before you begin, check with your landlord, mortgage owner, or local council to see if operating from home is allowed. You might need specific home business insurance or to check if business rates apply to your property.

Step 4 — Notify HMRC about your new income

Selling food means you are earning an income, so you may need to register as self-employed with HMRC. You are responsible for your own tax records, so visit GOV.UK or chat with a tax expert to ensure your business structure is correctly set up.

Step 5 — Master food safety and hygiene protocols

Prioritize health by learning the best practices for safe storage, deep cleaning, avoiding cross-contamination, and monitoring cooking temperatures. Complete a Food Safety Level 2 training and get your certification

Step 6 — Package your meals securely for delivery

Use high-quality, food-grade containers. Ensure every dish is tightly sealed, safely transported, and clearly labeled for your customers.

Step 8 — Launch your Homegry profile and custom menu

With the legalities covered, it is time to go live. Set up your chef profile, upload vibrant photos of your kitchen, and share your signature homemade dishes.
